Movie Review: It's Kind of a Funny Story

Among all the movies that were playing earlier today, most of them were all horror flicks (i.e. case39, devil, buried), secretariat and some film with talking owls. At the end of the day, watching It's Kind of a Funny Story was money well spent.
Directed by Anna Bode & Ryan Fleck, 'It's Kind of a Funny Story' is based from a book by Ned Vizzini. It's a dramedy about a highly depressed teenager named Craig (Keir Gilchrist) who voluntarily admits himself to a psych ward. He later meets Zach Galifianakis' character, Bobby the all-knowing inpatient that takes him under his wing. With the people he's come in contact with, he finds a new perspective in life and reason to continue living.
Zach Galifianakis does a great job in this film. We get to see a more serious side to Galifianakis for once. Surprisingly, he pulls it off nicely. I really don't know much about Keir Gilchrist but he did a superb job taking the lead role. Im sure we'll get to see more of him in later teen angst films.
The experiences we all face when growing up is never easy. Especially when you take that first big step into adulthood. In more ways than one, i can relate to Craig's character [which I'll discuss later in a future blog]. Despite the funny side to this film, audiences get a sense of how common people are faced with severe depression, especially teens. Considering the fact that the movie is a comedic drama, the director's representation of what goes on in a mental institution doesn't come close to how it is in real life. In all honesty, i actually enjoyed watching 'It's Kind of a Funny Story,' a slice of life story with a funny twist. So, if you do plan on goin' to the movies this week give this film a try.
